LOS ANGELES – Talk radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger has issued an apology for saying the N-word several times in an on-air conversation with a caller that she said was "hypersensitive" to racism.

Schlessinger said on her website Wednesday that she was wrong in using the word for what she called an attempt to make a philosophical point.
"I articulated the N-word all the way out — more than one time," Schlessinger said in comments from the opening of her radio show that she posted on her site. "And that was wrong. I'll say it again — that was wrong."

She said she "realized I had made a horrible mistake, and was so upset, I could not finish the show."

Schlessinger said she pulled herself off the air at the end of the hour.

During the exchange on Tuesday's show, Schlessinger said the woman who called herself Jade was too sensitive for complaining that her husband's friends made racist comments about her in their home.

When the woman asked if the N-word was offensive, Dr. Laura said "black guys say it all the time," then went on to repeat it several times.

Schlessinger did not direct the epithet at the woman, but said she used it to suggest how often she hears it, and that it should not automatically be cause for offense.
When the caller objected, Schlessinger replied: "Oh, then I guess you don't watch HBO or listen to any black comedians."

Schlessinger also said that if the caller did not have a sense of humor about race, she shouldn't have entered into an interracial marriage.

I've listend to her show a few times over the years. I mostly found her to be obnoxious.
I think her martyr like speach of her claim that she wants to regain her fist amendement rights is a diversion to draw attention away from the reality that she knows she messed up. Seems to me as though she says pretty much whatever comes to her mind. I don't understand her claim that she is losing her right to speak.

I kind of like her extreme stance on whiney people and I definitely agree with her on why people lack self-esteem and how the whole self-esteem generation is more narcissitic than worthy of esteem and something to actually be proud of. She is very in your face which I find refreshing at times in our coddling, hand-holding nanny state. With that said she's a total bitch! But callers know what they are getting when they dial those numbers and if not, their bad for not doing their research on someone they are about to ask for advice.

Kind of reminds me of that new Geico commercial with the ex-drill seargent who becomes a therapist. I laugh at that commercial every time mostly because that's probably the kind of therapist I would be, which is why I THANK GOD for the diversity of human beings and for those of you out there with the compassion and patience that I sometimes lack.

Dr. Laura is a weight on the scale of balance. I find balance a good thing.

I find the whole "N" word thing confusing and at the risk of being accused of being a racist...I think being offended by it is what GIVES it the power. If you call me the "C" word, I laugh at your crassness. Take away the power by letting go of the past and moving forward in a positive direction without bitterness - Dr. King warned against having bitterness in the cause. If I were offended everytime someone thought I was a bitch and I had to be crying and whining and finding someone to blame for my hurt feelings that somehow allow me to accept failure then I would never succeed. Women were chattel - not allowed to vote and basically slaves procured for a dowry. Give me a break.
