worlds highest jump

I stumbled onto this last night by accident. It is the world record for the highest parachute jump. 102,800 ft. For perspective a normal jump if you got one of those coupons for a discount first time tandem jump would be in the 10,000 - 15,000 ft range. A commuter turbo prop plane is about 23,000 ft. Commercial jet traffic is 30,000ish. The concord [ no longer available] flew at nearly 60,000 ft. This man jumped from the edge of space.
Is it odd that we set this record in 1960 in a world that was for all practical purposes pre computer?

Extreme! Amazing! He had a balloon take him up there and broke the sound barrier on his jump. wow.
