The Power of the Written Word Empty The Power of the Written Word

Post by ericclimbs Wed Feb 17, 2010 5:20 am

So one night at WS the Tap asked what books would you send Sam in jail. The discussion quickly became an exercise in free association regarding great books in general. Those of us who were up that evening began firing off recommendations back and forth.

    So lets talk books.

What are you currently reading right now?

Have you read "Lucky" by Alice Sebold? Its a memoir of a tragic experience she had. Very intense and hard to read. Her willingness to share such a story is truly courageous.

Just finished Night by Elie Wiesel again. I'm about to finish Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides which I had lost when we moved, but I found it thankfully.

Night is great, another brutally honest and soul-wrenching memoir. What is Ghost Soldiers about (in general, without giving away the plot)? Lately I find myself reading mostly nonfiction though I am about halfway through Fiskadoro by Dennis Johnson. It is a truly unique post-apocalyptic tale.

Well hey there! I have also read "The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty", enjoyed it, and could probably recommend some other titles in the same, uh, ahem, genre.

I haven't read "Beauty's Punishment" but, if I recall correctly, it should begin at her banishment.

    "question and answer"
he sat naked and drunk in a room of summer
night, running the blade of the knife
    under his fingernails, smiling, thinking
of all the letters he had received
    telling him that
the way he lived and wrote about
    that--
it had kept them going when
    all seemed
    truly
    hopeless.

putting the blade on the table, he
    flicked it with a finger
    and it whirled
    in a flashing circle
    under the light.

who the hell is going to save
    me? he
    thought.

    as the knife stopped spinning
    the answer came:
    you're going to have to
    save yourself.

    still smiling,
    a: he lit a
    cigarette
    b: he poured
    another
    drink
    c: gave the blade
    another
    spin.

It's a book on the Bataan Death March and the rescue of the American and Allied POW's from the Japanese in WWII. That's pretty much all I read is WWI/WWII books.

Looks like we are similar in that many of us can't resist reading more than one book at a time. Its like when you get a new one you just can't wait to finish what you are already reading to delve into the new one.

Besides Fiskadoro I am also reading:

Dark Summit: The True Story of Everest's Most Controversial Season by Nick Heil (This is an account of the 2006 season, not the 1996 season as many might presume)

Explorers of the Infinite by Maria Coffey

No Shortcuts to the Top: Climbing the World's Highest Peaks by Ed Viesturs

The Genie In Your Genes: Epigenetic Medicine and the New Biology of Intention by Dawson Church

The Road Less Traveled by M. Scott Peck (I never got around to reading this one until now)

No that's good stuff. Whenever I go on a backpacking or climbing trip I like taking books like that. They are usually small (in size = lightweight) paperbacks which often quickly draw you into an enigmatic plot.

I love comics of all kinds, been collecting them since I was a kid. There is a lot to be learned in a comic book if you read between the lines. Social and political satire is a great thing.

Have you read any of the Hidden Grotto Books by Louisa Burton? I've read the first two (House of Dark Delights and Bound in Moonlight). I have the third installment but haven't read it yet. Some parts are a little dull but, for most part, I definately recommend them. Cool
